MEET MELISSA
Hi, I'm Melissa.
I'm the founder of Root & Branch Consulting LLC, where I help mission-driven organizations secure funding, strengthen communications, and build capacity for growth through grant writing, nonprofit communications, and organizational support.
I bring more than 13 years of experience across nonprofit, higher education, workforce development, communications, administration, and community engagement, along with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Social Work. Throughout my career, I've been drawn to work that helps people, strengthens communities, and supports organizations creating meaningful, lasting change.
Before launching Root & Branch Consulting, I spent nearly a decade working at a university-based Women's Center focused on the prevention of and response to sexual and domestic violence. My work included developing educational programs, coordinating community outreach initiatives, staffing support hotlines, assisting survivors as they navigated reporting and court processes, and building partnerships with campus and community organizations. These experiences strengthened my ability to communicate with empathy, collaborate across diverse groups, and understand the complex realities that individuals and organizations navigate every day.
My professional experience also includes workforce development and career services, where I supported job seekers through résumé development, interview preparation, career coaching, and relationship-building with employers. Working alongside individuals from diverse backgrounds reinforced the importance of listening first, meeting people where they are, and helping connect them with opportunities and resources that support long-term success.
My graduate education in social work continues to shape the way I approach every consulting project. I believe the strongest grant proposals and organizational strategies begin with understanding people—not just programs. Behind every nonprofit initiative are staff, volunteers, community partners, and the individuals being served. Taking time to understand those relationships, along with an organization's strengths, challenges, and capacity, helps create proposals and strategies that are both compelling and realistic.
Throughout my career, I've relied on strong writing, communication, and relationship-building skills to connect people and organizations with resources, opportunities, and support. I've developed educational materials, outreach campaigns, presentations, brochures, newsletters, grant narratives, and communications designed to inform, engage, and inspire action.
Today, I use those same skills to support nonprofit organizations through grant research, proposal writing, nonprofit communications, funder outreach, organizational planning, and development support. I currently partner with organizations including AKNEW, Inc. and Connecticut Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, helping strengthen organizational capacity, secure funding, and expand opportunities for the communities they serve. My work has contributed to successful grant awards, including funding opportunities that were new to the organizations I support.
What I enjoy most about this work is building lasting partnerships with organizations that are deeply committed to serving their communities. Every nonprofit has its own story, strengths, and challenges, and I value taking the time to understand each organization's unique mission before developing thoughtful, practical solutions. It is a privilege to contribute to work that helps organizations strengthen their foundations, expand their reach, and create meaningful impact.
Thank you for visiting. If you'd like to learn more about my services or discuss how I may be able to support your organization, I'd love to connect.

WHAT IT'S LIKE TO WORK TOGETHER
Throughout my career, I've often heard some version of, "You don't mess around." What people usually mean is that I take initiative, stay on task, communicate promptly, and follow through. I bring a professional, organized approach to my work while remaining responsive and accessible to the organizations I support. Whether it's a grant deadline, communications project, or behind-the-scenes coordination, I strive to be a dependable partner who helps move projects from idea to implementation and keeps momentum moving forward.
